The Australian Government has unveiled a major reform package aimed at protecting the long-term future of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) for generations to come.
The reforms focus on four key areas: combating fraud and misuse, slowing rapid cost growth, improving eligibility clarity, and delivering higher quality supports and services for participants. The Government says the changes are necessary to ensure the NDIS remains sustainable while continuing to support Australians living with permanent and significant disabilities.
As part of the announcement, the rollout of the new framework planning system has been delayed until 1 April 2027 following consultation with participants, families, carers, and disability advocates. The delay will provide additional time to test processes, gather feedback, and ensure a smoother transition for participants.
The Government also confirmed it will introduce the National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) Bill after the 2026–27 Federal Budget. The reforms build on recommendations from both the Independent Review into the NDIS and the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability.
Officials say the reforms are designed to strengthen the NDIS, improve participant outcomes, and ensure the scheme continues to support Australians well into the future.
