  • Proactive Strategies: Emphasis on preventing challenging behaviours by modifying the environment or teaching new skills rather than reacting after behaviours occur.
  • Skill Development: Focus on helping participants build skills in areas such as communication, emotional regulation, and problem-solving.
  • Reducing Restrictive Practices: Behaviour support plans aim to reduce or eliminate the use of restrictive practices (e.g., physical restraints, seclusion), promoting participant autonomy and dignity.
 

Examples of Behaviour Support Strategies

  • Environmental Modifications: Changing the physical or social environment to reduce triggers for challenging behaviours (e.g., reducing noise levels, modifying routines).
  • Communication Supports: Teaching the participant alternative ways to express their needs or frustrations, such as using augmentative communication tools or learning social skills.
  • Positive Reinforcement: Encouraging desirable behaviours through rewards or incentives, such as praise, treats, or privileges.
  • De-escalation Techniques: Training participants and caregivers in calming strategies or techniques to manage stressful situations without escalating into challenging behaviour.
