What Is SIL?

A Home of Your Own, With the Right Support

Supported Independent Living is for people with higher support needs who need help at home most or all of the time. Our support workers help with daily tasks and personal care, and just as importantly, help you build the skills to do more for yourself over time.

SIL is a stated support in your Core Supports budget under Home and Living. It works hand in hand with our assistance with self-care and domestic assistance services, and can be delivered in a shared home or on your own.

Clearing Up the Confusion

SIL vs SDA: What's the Difference?

People often mix these up. SIL is the support you receive; SDA is the specialist home you live in. You can have one, the other, or both.

SIL, the support

Supported Independent Living

The people and the help. SIL funds support workers to assist you with daily living, personal care and supervision, wherever you live. It does not pay for the building.

SDA, the home

Specialist Disability Accommodation

The bricks and mortar. SDA is funding for specially designed or modified housing for people with extreme functional impairment or very high support needs. It pays for the dwelling, not the daily support.

You can receive SIL and live in a rental, your own or family home, community housing, SDA, or provider-managed accommodation, shared with 2 to 7 people or on your own.

Recent Updates

What Changed for 2026

Keep these 2026 points in mind

  • New price limits from 1 July 2026. The NDIS Pricing Schedule 2026-27 updated the support worker rates that SIL is charged at, following the Annual Pricing Review.
  • SIL is a stated support. Once your SIL package is approved you cannot use other budgets to pay for items SIL covers, so your Roster of Care must include every support you need.
  • Home and Living reforms. The NDIA continues to strengthen how it assesses Home and Living, using functional assessment and a clear Roster of Care to decide funding.
  • SIL is separate from SDA. SIL never pays rent or the cost of your dwelling. If you need specialist housing, that is funded separately through SDA.

Common Questions

NDIS SIL, FAQs

Direct answers to the questions we hear most. See our full FAQ page for more.

What is Supported Independent Living (SIL)? +

SIL is a package of NDIS supports that helps a person with disability live as independently as possible at home. It funds daily help such as personal care, meal preparation, household tasks, supervision and getting around, and can be delivered on your own or in a shared home. SIL is for people with higher support needs who need help at home most or all of the time.

Which NDIS budget pays for SIL? +

SIL is funded from your Core Supports budget under Home and Living. It is a stated support, which means the funding is set aside for SIL and cannot be used for anything else. Because of this, it is important your Roster of Care includes every support you need.

What does SIL cover, and what does it not cover? +

SIL covers personal care, meal preparation, household tasks, medication prompts, help getting around, support with behaviours, and overnight or 24/7 assistance. It does not cover rent, food, utilities such as electricity and internet, everyday personal items, or the cost of the home itself.

What is the difference between SIL and SDA? +

SIL is the support you receive, the workers who help you with daily living. SDA (Specialist Disability Accommodation) is the specially designed or modified home you live in, funded separately for people with extreme functional impairment or very high support needs. SIL pays for the people, SDA pays for the building. You can have one, the other, or both.

How much does SIL cost in 2026-27? +

SIL is charged at the NDIS support worker rates. Under the Pricing Schedule 2026-27 (from 1 July 2026), the National limits are $73.58 per hour weekday daytime, $81.07 weekday evening, $82.57 weekday night, $103.54 Saturday, $133.50 Sunday, $163.46 public holidays, and $311.79 for an overnight sleepover. In shared homes these costs are split between participants based on the support ratio.

What are the three levels of SIL funding? +

Lower needs is regular support where 24/7 care is not required. Standard needs is more active 24-hour assistance including supervision and overnight sleepovers. Higher needs is continual, complex active support including help managing frequent behaviours of concern. Your level is based on your assessment and Roster of Care.

Can I choose where I live and who I live with? +

Yes. You can receive SIL in a rental, your own or family home, community housing, SDA, or provider-managed accommodation, and live on your own or share with 2 to 7 people. NDIS participants have choice and control over their living arrangements and supports.

How do I get SIL in my NDIS plan? +

SIL is usually included when you have a goal to live independently. You will need evidence such as an occupational therapist functional assessment, and a Roster of Care and quote showing the support you need. The NDIA reviews this and decides your SIL funding. We can help prepare the Roster of Care and guide you through the process.

We are based in Narre Warren and deliver SIL across South-East Melbourne, greater Melbourne and Victoria, including Dandenong, Cranbourne, Berwick, Pakenham, Frankston and Casey. Contact us to talk about SIL options in your area.
